Mangawhai Magic

A Barn with purpose - sustainable living in Mangawhai

A beautifully crafted off the grid barn with 36m2 of weekend pad living plus loft and workshop is nestled in Northland’s east coast, surrounded with regenerating native bush and bird song.

Built with a focus on reducing our carbon footprint, careful space planning has made this small space feel big with high ceilings, large glazing and fun materials.

A strong focus on NZ made, low maintenance materials and natural products such as wool insulation and macrocarpa linings make for a healthy internal air quality with minimal VOC’s. Rainwater is roof collected and wastewater is treated by a NaturalFlow Tiger Worm wastewater system that simulates the natural forest floor when reintroduced into the environment.

The fully off the grid design, free from any street connection has been carefully specified to ensure all the usual comforts of a grid-tied home without any compromise in lifestyle. Solar panels ensure the energy supply is as eco-friendly as the materials that went into its construction. 6.56 kW of rooftop photovoltaic panels generates 7.9MWh annually stored in 19.2kW of lithium batteries, sufficient to ensure hot water, cooking and heating can be supplied by efficient appliances without relying on gas.

This isn’t just a weekend pad, but a lifestyle choice without compromise, that values simplicity and sustainability.
